Russian businessman Evgeny Kalinin released in Greece

The Russian had been detained upon the request of Ukraine.

Russian businessman Evgeny Kalinin who had been detained upon the request of Ukraine at the Athens Airport has been released at the direction of an attorney of the Athens appeal court. Kalinin and his family have already set off for Russia.

“The attorney’s decision contained indication that he had been arrested by mistake, as there was no international warrant against him,” the lawyer Giannis Rakhiotis told RIA Novosti.

Former Executive Director of VETEK Evgeny Kalinin was detained at the Athens Airport on March 2 upon the request of Ukraine. The Russian was accused of creation of a criminal organization, forgery by an official and evasion of the payment of taxes on an especially large scale. According to Ukraine’s Criminal Code, he faced from 10 to 12 years in prison.

Kalinin stated the Ukraine’s authorities were trying to deal away with him, as he had worked with companies of a businessman Sergey Kurchenko who is close to Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovich.
